Description

Lichfield, Staffordshire born right back Charles Ditchfield began his football career with Lichfield St Chad’s in 1887 and played for the Rifle Brigade in 1888, Winchester, Winchester Rovers and Winchester Town in 1889, Ulster in 1890 and Glenthorn in 1891. He joined First Division club Accrington in 1892 and made his Football League debut against Sunderland that September, missing only one match and playing 32 games as they were relegated after losing to Sheffield United in a Test Match at The Town Ground, Nottingham.

His whereabouts between 1893 and 1895 are uncertain, but he joined Rossendale in 1895 from where he returned to Football League action with Second Division Manchester City, playing 5 matches in April 1896 including three Test Matches, where they lost over two legs to Small Heath (now Birmingham City). He played a further 10 matches of the new season through to the end of October 1896, scoring once in a win over Darwen, before losing his place and subsequently ending his professional career.

NB seated in front of him front left of the photograph is the legendary Billy Meredith.
