South Anston, Yorkshire born centre half Frank Whitfield began his football career with Anston White Star after the end of the First World War in 1919, from where he joined First Division Huddersfield Town in 1920, spending two seasons on their books without making a first team appearance. He signed for Third Division (North) club Wigan Borough in May 1922 and made his Football League debut against Ashington that August, and was a regular performer in their first eleven for two seasons before losing his place at the start of the 1924-25 season, only appearing once more before being transferred to Lincoln City in September 1924 after 6 goals in 77 appearances for Borough.
Whitfield stayed only a single season at Sincil Bank scoring twice in 24 appearances before joining Southend United in the 1925 close season, but he made only 2 appearances for The Shrimpers in the Spring of 1926 before returning north, joining Doncaster Rovers that August. A bride spell at Belle Vue saw a single goal in 6 matches before a return to Wigan Borough that October, but he didn’t make any further appearances for Wigan before joining non league Middlewich later the same year. He had a brief spell at Chesterfield joining them in September 1927 but soon returned to Middlewich where he played until his eventual retirement.
