Cheetham, Manchester born centre forward George Anderson began his football career playing for Broughton St James and Broughton Wellington in 1908, joining Salford United in 1909 from where he signed for First Division club Bury in March 1910, making his Football League debut against Sheffield United the following month. After a pair of appearances in Bury’s first team in 1910-11, he joined Manchester United in September 1911, and was initially a fringe player at Old Trafford, making his debut for United against Everton the same month, his only first team appearance of 1911-12.
He broke into the first team scoring against Notts County in a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford in November 1912, scoring 14 goals in 29 matches in 1912-13, and he scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Preston North End in October 1913, scoring 15 times in 32 matches during the 1913-14 campaign. He remained a regular in United’s first eleven until peacetime football was suspended due to the onset of the First World War, by when he had scored 39 goals in 86 appearances for The Red Devils.
