Plymouth, Devon born goalkeeper George Ashmore represented South Devon & District Schools and began his football career with Handsworth League club Nineveh Wesley, from where he joined First Division West Bromwich Albion in November 1919, making his Football League debut at Blackburn Rovers in October 1920. For three seasons he was understudy to Hubert Pearson but he displaced Pearson from August 1923, missing only one match in 1924-25 and two games in 1925-26.
His solitary cap for England came in a friendly against Belgium in Antwerp on 24th May 1926. The match finished 5-3 to England with Frank Osborne scoring a hat-trick as England came from 3-2 down to take the match.
The following season he missed only 4 matches as West Bromwich Albion were relegated at the end of the 1926-27 season, and after their relegation Harold Pearson played more matches each season, eventually reclaiming the gloves from Ashmore in March 1929.
On 24th March 1928 (Easter Monday), Albion played Southampton at The Dell. and an unusual incident occurred. Ashmore had been injured and was replaced in goal by a defender, being switched to the wing. In the second half, with the scores level at 2-2, Ashmore was back helping out in defence. Forgetting that he was now an outfield player, he caught the ball in the penalty area; Stan Cribb duly scored from the penalty spot to give The Saints victory.
Pearson was an ever present during 1930-31 when Albion both won promotion from the Second Division and won the FA Cup, and Ashmore left The Hawthorns after 268 appearances, joining Chesterfield at the start of October 1931. He was the principal glovesman for two seasons at Saltergate, making 77 appearances before retiring in the summer of 1933.
