Edmonton, Middlesex born wing half Billy Askew began his football career with Xylonite in 1905, playing for Gothic Works in 1906 and Chadwell Heath and Finchley in 1907 before joining Southern League club Southend United in 1908. A move to East Anglia saw him join Norwich City in 1909 from where he joined First Division Aston Villa in 1911, making his Football League debut at Bradford City that September, also playing on New Year’s Day at Bolton Wanderers, both matches ending in defeat, and remained in the reserves during 1911-12 without making any further first team appearances.
He was transferred to Southern League club West Ham United in the 1912 close season and he was a regular in their line up in the final three seasons before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, and was an ever present during The Hammers’ 1913-14 campaign, scoring twice in 112 appearances for West Ham. He also played a season of wartime league football for The Irons in 1915-16, making a further 28 appearances, but had already retired from professional football before it had resumed its peacetime programme in 1919.
