Description

Birmingham born left back Arthur Griffiths played junior football for Park Mills in 1895 and Lozells in 1896 and had an unsuccessful trial with Aston Villa before joining Bristol Rovers (then known as Bristol Eastville Rovers) in 1897 from Lozells. During his first two seasons Rovers played in both the Birmingham & District League and the professional section of the Western League, before becoming founder members of the Southern League in 1899.

He went on to play 105 games for Rovers in the Southern League, scoring once, before joining Football League First Division Notts County in the 1903 close season, making his Football League debut at Sheffield United in October 1903. In 1907 he was described as “very reliable, speedy and uses his head in more senses than one”. He became club captain at Notts County, playing his last game for them on Boxing Day 1911, scoring once, in a defeat at Aston Villa in November 1904, in 171 appearances over nine seasons, all of which were played in the First Division.
