Uddingston, Lanarkshire born left back Jack Hendry began his football career with Uddingston in 1888, from where he joined Glasgow Rangers a year later, in their pre Scottish League era. He made 3 Scottish Cup appearances for Rangers in 1889 as well as making other appearances in competitions such as The Glasgow Cup and The Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup, before joining Notts County in the 1890 close season.

He made his Football League debut at Bolton Wanderers in September that season, and was a regular performer for Notts, and Hendry was responsible for the handball foul in the February 1891 FA Cup quarter final that is credited for changing opinion in English soccer about the legitimacy of penalty kicks. Hendry had denied Stoke an equaliser with only seconds of the game remaining by handling the ball on the goal-line. The resulting free kick was lost denying Stoke chance of a place in the semi-final while Notts proceeded as far as the 1891 FA Cup Final, where Hendry played as Notts County lost the Final 3-1 to Blackburn Rovers at The Kennington Oval.

He was an ever present in their 1892-93 campaign when they were relegated after losing in the Test Match series to Darwen. The following season Hendry played as Notts County beat Bolton Wanderers in the 1894 FA Cup Final at Goodison Park, becoming the first Second Division winners of the Cup.

In 1895 he was again in The Magpies’ team as they lost to Derby County in the promotion Test Match, scoring his only goal for Notts County in a 2-0 win over Burton Wanderers in January 1895, having finished runners up in the Second Division. Hendry left Notts County a year later after six seasons at Meadow Lane, having made 186 appearances, joining Heanor Town. He had a single season there before joining Southern League Sheppey United in the summer of 1897. He then joined Rushden in 1898 and finished his career with Northampton Town, whom he joined in 1899.
