Description

Stenhousemuir, Stirlingshire born left back Jimmy Hodge played for hometown Scottish League club Stenhousemuir from 1909 before moving south to join First Division Manchester United in 1910 where he made his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday in April 1911 as United closed in on the League Championship, playing once more before the end of the season. The following campaign saw Hodge make some inroads into Ernest Mangnall’s starting eleven, helped no doubt by the fact that he was also comfortable playing in the forward line and even in goal. Despite his versatility, Hodge was used largely as cover for injured team mates and managed a total of just 10 matches as United finished in a disappointing 13th place.

From October 1912 he played increasingly regularly for United until April 1914, when he lost his place in the side having made 29 appearances in 1913-14, but after service in India and Mesopotamia with The Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War, during which he also played a number of wartime matches for United, Hodge then returned to Old Trafford after the conflict and scored his first two career goals in the autumn of 1919, the first coming in a 3-3 draw at rivals Manchester City, making 16 appearances in their 1919-20 campaign.

After 85 appearances for The Red Devils, he joined Southern League Millwall towards the end of 1919 for £1,500, and made 17 appearances for Millwall during their inaugural 1920-21 Football League season, scoring a penalty, including being part of the team for their inaugural League match as they beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 in August 1920. In the 1921 close season he joined Norwich City playing two seasons in East Anglia, scoring once in 55 appearances, before joining Southend United in 1923, where he played 21 games in 1923-24. He then joined non league Buxton in 1924 and played for Buxton Medical Institution in 1925.

His brother John also played for Stenhousemuir and Manchester United before the First World War.
