Leith, Edinburgh born centre half John Borthwick began his football career with Royal Oak in 1902 and played for Edinburgh Clifton in 1903, Wemyss Violet in 1904 and Lochgelly United in 1905, from where he signed for Hibernian in 1906, making his Scottish League debut against Hamilton Academical in May 1907. He scored his only goal for Hibernian in a Scottish Cup tie against Morton in February 1908 and played 33 matches for Hibs before being bought by First Division Everton in April 1908, making his Football League debut almost immediately in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Goodison Park, his only appearance before the season end.
He remained as a fringe player in 1908-09 and played only once as Jock Maconnachie filled the centre half role, but enjoyed a run in the team from late October 1909 to April 1910, making 19 of his 25 appearances for Everton before transferring to Southern League Millwall Athletic in the 1911 close season. After three years in South London he returned to Scotland in 1914, and played for East Fife in 1914 and Cowdenbeath in 1915 before finishing his career.
