Hednesford, Staffordshire born left back Teddy Bowen started his football career playing for Hednesford Rovers in 1919 and played for Hednesford Primitives and Hednesford Congregationals in 1920, joining Rugeley in 1921 and Hednesford Town in 1922 before signing for First Division Aston Villa in 1923, making his Football League debut at Cardiff City in January 1924. He was a regular in the first team from November until January 1931 when he lost his place and became a very occasional starter, making only 8 appearances during his final three seasons at Villa Park. In the interim he played 34 matches as Villa finished third in the League Championship in 1928-29 and 26 games as they finished runners up in 1930-31.
By the time he joined Norwich City in the close season of 1934 he had made 203 appearances for Aston Villa. In four seasons at Carrow Road he scored twice, both times from the penalty spot, in 139 games and was an ever present in their 1936-37 campaign, before retiring from professional football in the summer of 1938.
NB in the photograph he appears with Aston Villa team mates Jimmy Gibson, Billy Walker and Alec Talbot.
