Walbottle, Newcastle upon Tyne born right half George Browell began his football career with West Stanley in 1904 before signing for Second Division Hull City in September 1905, making his Football League debut against Burton United at the end of the same month. An ever present the following season, he was a regular for The Tigers until losing his place in December 1910, after which he only made three further appearances for Hull City before joining Grimsby Town in the 1911 close season after 3 goals in 208 appearances. He didn’t get into The Mariners’ first team until December 1911 but was a regular thereafter in what proved his only season at Blundell Park, making 23 appearances for Grimsby Town before returning to play for West Stanley in the summer of 1912.
Browell was the oldest of three footballing brothers. Centre half Andy Browell played for Hull City and once for Everton. His youngest brother, Tommy Browell, had a considerable football career with Hull City, Everton, Manchester City, Motherwell and Blackpool, as well as representing The Football League. All three Browell brothers first played together on 10th September 1910 in a match at Bolton Wanderers, and this very rare occurrence (three brothers playing in the same team) happened only once more, in a 1-0 win at Fulham the following week.
