Description

South Shields, County Durham born left half William Smith began his football career with Jarrow in 1926 from where he was signed by First Division Sheffield Wednesday, making his Football League debut in the Steel City derby in February 1930, one of 4 appearances he made in his debut season as The Owls retained their League Championship title as the season end. However in his four seasons at Hillsborough his opportunities were generally very limited, besides a run in the team between August and December 1931 when he made 17 of his 29 career appearances for The Owls, scoring his only goal in a 3-2 victory at Chelsea in September 1931.

In the summer of 1933 he moved to Second Division Brentford, but had played for The Bees only once at Nottingham Forest in August when he was transferred on to Third Division (South) club Crystal Palace in October, where he stayed three seasons, scoring once in 43 appearances for The Eagles. He was then signed by Second Division Burnley in the 1936 close season, but in three seasons at Turf Moor Smith was only a regular in the first team during 1937-38, when he missed only 5 matches. After 56 appearances for Burnley he joined Accrington Stanley in the summer of 1939, but having played only one match for Stanley the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 effectively ended his career and he retired during the War.

NB in the image he is shown with Sheffield Wednesday team mates Jack Brown, Charlie Wilson and Jack Allen.
