Description

Brighton, Sheffield born goalkeeper Joe Calvert began his football career with Bullcroft Main Colliery in 1928 and played for Owston Park Rangers in 1929 and Frickley Colliery in 1930, from where he signed for Third Division (South) club Bristol Rovers in May 1931, making his Football League debut at Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic the same August. An ever present in his only season at Eastville making 44 appearances, he was sold to Leicester City in May 1932, where he spent almost all of his career as an understudy to other goalkeepers and became dedicated servant of the club, playing for the club both sides of the Second World War. In 1938-39 he made 11 appearances in Leicester’s relegation season, the most appearances he made in any one season in seven seasons.

After the War he returned to Filbert Street and played for Leicester in the 1946 FA Cup, before taking over the gloves in the first League season after the War, making 37 appearances. However he only played 6 more matches in 1947-48 and in January 1948 Calvert requested a transfer, and after 80 matches for The Foxes over nearly 16 years he joined Watford the same month where he played 5 matches before the end of the season. He then joined non league Brush Sports before his eventual retirement.
