Born in Lugar, Ayrshire right back Bob Campbell started his football career in 1897 with junior clubs Lugar Boswell and Craigston Strollers before signing with Partick Thistle in 1898, with whom he won a Scottish League representative honour when selected against The Irish League in February 1903, before moving to Glasgow Rangers later in 1903. He played for Rangers until 1905, making nine appearances and scoring once before he moved to England and joined Southern League Millwall Athletic.
He spent one season at Millwall, playing 28 games before moving to Second Division Bradford City in the summer of 1906, making his Football League debut at Leeds City that September. He partnered Fred Farren in the City full back line, helping the club to win the Second Division Championship in 1907-08 and then the FA Cup in 1911 when they sensationally beat Newcastle United in the Final at The Crystal Palace. He played a total of 248 League FA Cup games for City scoring once from the penalty spot against Middlesbrough in a 1-0 win in April 1911, before retiring after peacetime football in England was suspended because of the onset of the First World War in 1915.
