Description

Elton, Aberdeenshire born right back and forward (in later years) Robert Campbell began his senior football career with famous amateur club Queen’s Park in 1904, making his Scottish League debut in a defeat at Glasgow Rangers that October and scoring in a 1-1 draw the following week against Glasgow rivals Celtic, his only goal in 25 appearances for The Spiders before he was sold to Glasgow Rangers for £250 in May 1905. He didn’t get to make his debut for Rangers until the following January in a win over Port Glasgow Athletic but having established himself in the first team he was a fixture during nine seasons at Ibrox, winning three Scottish League Championships, three Glasgow Cups, two Merchants Charity Cups and the Scottish National Exhibition Tournament in 1908.

In the 1906-07 season Campbell saw himself being played up front. His very first match in attack, a benefit match against Morton, saw him score all seven of the goals in a 7-0 win. His partnership with Archie Kyle saw him score 13 goals that season. He finished the following two seasons as Rangers top scorer with 25 and 17 goals respectively but he switched back to defence with the arrival of Willie Reid.

He scored 56 goals in 211 League and Cup appearances for Rangers, playing for the last time in a defeat at Falkirk in April 1914, before joining Kilmarnock in the 1914 close season, scoring 3 goals in 6 appearances for Killie before joining Ayr United, where he subsequently finished his career.

After his retirement he became a director of Rangers in 1926.
