Description

Carlisle, Cumberland born outside right Jackie Cape began his football career with North Eastern League club Penrith from where he joined hometown Third Division (North) club Carlisle United in May 1929, making his Football League debut against Port Vale the same September. It didn’t take long for his ability to be noticed, and he was signed by First Division Newcastle United for £1,750 in January 1930 after 3 goals in 18 appearances for The Cumbrians. He immediately made his Newcastle debut in a heavy defeat at Leicester City and had to wait two months for another opportunity, scoring in a win at Burnley.

In September 1930 Cape scored a hat-trick in a remarkable 7-4 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, but despite this he spent four seasons on the fringes of first team action at St James’ Park. Perhaps with the memory of that match, it was Manchester United who signed Cape for £2,000 in January 1934 after 20 goals in 53 appearances for The Toon, and he had more opportunities at Old Trafford although never guaranteed his place, making 17 appearances for The Red Devils as they won the Second Division Championship in 1935-36.

However he only played 4 times in the top flight the following season before transferring to Queen’s Park Rangers in June 1937 after 18 goals in 60 appearances for United. He missed only two matches for Rangers in 1937-38 as The R’s finished third in the Third Division (South) missing out on promotion, but lost his place in February 1939 and re-joined Carlisle United in August 1939 after 13 goals in 65 appearances for QPR. He hadn’t played yet for Carlisle when the outbreak of the Second World War forced the abandonment of the 1939-40 season and of peacetime football, indeed Cape had to wait until November 1945, when he scored in an FA Cup tie win over North Shields to make his second debut for Carlisle.

After a brief spell with Midland League club Scarborough, he re-joined Carlisle a third time in October 1946, and played 3 matches for them either side of New Year, before his retirement in 1947 having scored 6 goals in 25 appearances over nearly 18 years between first and last matches for The Cumbrians.

NB in the image he is shown with Newcastle team mates Tommy Urwin, Mick Burns and Joseph Richardson.
