Middlewich, Cheshire born left half Sam Challinor began his football career with Middlewich and joined Lancashire Combination club Witton Albion in 1910, from where he was signed by First Division Everton in May 1913. He hadn’t made a first team appearance before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football. After the War he joined newly elected Third Division club Brentford in May 1920, making his Football League debut in Brentford’s second League match in a win over Millwall at the end of August. He scored twice in 32 appearances as Brentford struggled towards the foot of the table, before joining newly elected Third Division (North) club Halifax Town in July 1921.
Unlike at Brentford, he did play in Halifax’s first League fixture at Darlington in August 1921, but played only a single season for The Shaymen, scoring twice in 23 appearances. In June 1922 he joined Accrington Stanley scoring once in 23 appearances as Stanley finished eighth in the Third Division (North) but he again moved on after a single season, joining New Brighton in June 1923 ahead of their inaugural season in League football, playing in their first League match that August in a 1-1 draw at Bradford Park Avenue. He missed only two matched in 1923-24, scoring twice in 42 appearances for New Brighton before joining non league Mold Town in the 1924 close season, finally moving to join Llandudno in 1925 before his eventual retirement.
