Leadgate, County Durham born left back John Charlton began his football career with Wallsend in 1925 and joined Bradford City in 1927, spending two seasons on the books at Valley Parade without making a breakthrough to their first eleven. In October 1929 he transferred to First Division club Liverpool, where he made his Football League debut in a 2-2 draw with West Ham United at Anfield in October 1931, deputising for Tommy Lucas. Charlton was not selected for the next five League matches before making consecutive appearances in a 4-3 win against Manchester City at Anfield and a 6-0 defeat at Arsenal towards the end of November 1931, and remained on the books at Liverpool until the end of the season, after which he joined Irish League side Derry City.
