Description

Lye, near Stourbridge, Worcestershire born outside right George Chance began his football career with Dudley Wood Victoria in 1912 and played for Cradley Heath St Luke’s in 1913 and both Brierley Hill Alliance and Stourbridge in 1914 before the First World War forced a significant interruption to his progress.

After the War he joined newly elected Third Division (South) Bristol Rovers in May 1920 and featured in Rovers’ inaugural Football League match at Millwall in August 1920, although he didn’t become a regular in Rovers’ line up until September 1922. He scored 11 goals in 82 games over four seasons for The Pirates before moving to Gillingham in June 1924. In a single season at Priestfield he scored 4 goals in 47 games for Gillingham, missing only two matched, and his talent came to the attention of Millwall who signed him in April 1925 and he went on to play five seasons at Cold Blow Lane.

In his first two seasons Millwall finished third in the League, and Chance was an ever present in the first of those, 1925-26. He then missed only one match as Millwall won the 1928 Third Division (South) Championship, and missed only one match the next season as they consolidated their position in the Second Division. He had one further season at The Den and in all he scored 24 goals in 191 appearances for The Lions before he returned to Brierley Hill Alliance in 1930.
