Description

Southwick, County Durham born right back Ted Charlton played for Southwick and spent 1905-06 on the books of Sunderland as an amateur without making their first eleven. He moved to Southern League Champions Fulham in May 1906 and helped them retain the Southern League Championship in 1906-07, making 24 appearances during the campaign. When Fulham gained League status the following summer, Charlton made his Football League debut against Glossop in November 1907. Having established himself in the team in September 1908, he scored in a win at Burnley the following month, his only career goal in free play although he also scored 6 penalties for The Cottagers.

Charlton missed only one match a season during their 1909-10 and 1910-11 campaigns and was a regular until the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915. He returned to Craven Cottage after the cessation of hostilities and played 19 more matches in their first peacetime season of 1919-20 before losing his place in January 1920, joining non league Robert Thompson’s in the summer of 1920 after 7 goals in 269 appearances for Fulham. He joined North Eastern League club Carlisle United in 1921 and played a final two seasons for The Cumbrians before his retirement in 1923.
