Description

Rhyl, Denbighshire b0rn centre forward or outside left John Love Jones began his football career with Rhyl Athletic from where he joined First Division Stoke in 1905, making his Football League debut against Newcastle United the same December, scoring the only goal of the match. He scored twice more in 10 further appearances for Stoke before the season end. But after only playing in two matches in 1906-07 he was allowed to join non league Crewe Alexandra in 1907, not before he had made his international debut for Wales in a 2-0 victory over Scotland at Tynecastle in March 1906.

Jones returned to Football League action signing for Middlesbrough in March 1909, where he played exclusively at outside left, making 3 appearances before the end of the season and playing a further 11 matches in 1909-10, and while with ‘Boro he was recalled to the Wales team and won his second and final cap in a 4-1 win over Ireland at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham in April 1910. He left ‘Boro for Southern League club Portsmouth in 1911 where he scored 19 goals in 41 appearance before tragically dying at the age of just 28 in December 1913.
