Mexborough, Yorkshire born left half Willie Cooper began his football career with Mexborough in 1902 and played for Denaby United in 1903 from where he was signed by Second Division club Barnsley in October 1904, making his Football League debut at Burslem Port Vale in March 1907, playing one further match for The Tykes a month later when he played in a defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Cooper joined Southern League Portsmouth in the 1907 close season and enjoyed a season at Fratton Park before heading north to join Scottish League Dundee in 1908.
After a season with The Dark Blues he returned to Yorkshire to join new Midland League entrants Castleford Town, and moved on in successive seasons to play for Rochdale in 1910, Lincoln City in 1911 and Altrincham in 1912 before ending his career.
