Kettering, Northamptonshire born outside left Bert Hales began his football career with Desborough Hotspur in 1926 and played for Desborough Town in 1927 before joining Second Division club Nottingham Forest in January 1929, making his Football League debut at Millwall two months later. He played twice more before the end of the season but was released, and after a trial at Northampton Town he joined Southern League club Peterborough & Fletton United.
He joined Second Division outfit Stoke City in April 1930 and played just once for The Potters’ first eleven, lining up in a 1-1 draw with Bradford City on Boxing Day that year, before joining Preston North End in May 1931. He was a regular starter for Preston in 1931-32, missing only 4 games, but lost his place in December 1932 and played only twice more for North End before joining Chesterfield in June 1933 after 10 goals in 61 appearances for The Lilywhites.
He had a further 18 months at Saltergate before being signed by Stockport County in December 1934 after 12 goals in 46 appearances for Chesterfield, playing 22 matches for The Hatters before the end of the season. He then signed for Rochdale in July 1935 and scored 4 goals in 40 appearances during his single season stint at Spotland, joining Midland League Burton Town in the 1936 close season. After a brief spell with Kidderminster Harriers in 1937 he finished his career joining Cheltenham Town later the same year, his final known club before his eventual retirement.
