Description

Penrhiwceiber, Monmouthshire born outside left George Crisp began his football career with Melbourne Stars and played for Llanelly in 1933, from where he was signed by Third Division (South) club Coventry City the same November, making his Football League debut at Bristol Rovers in January 1934. Crisp made 7 further appearances before the season end as Coventry finished League runners up, narrowly missing out on promotion, but managed only one more appearance in 1934-35 before joining Bristol Rovers in July 1935.

Crisp scored 6 goals in 23 appearances for The Pirates but his spell at Eastville is most notable for the fact that he was in Rovers’ side the day Joe Payne scored 10 goals against them for Luton Town in April 1936. In June 1936 he moved to Newport County where he scored twice in 11 appearances for The Ironsides during 1936-37, before joining Southern League club Colchester United the following summer, where he won the Southern League Championship with The U’s.

His form at Colchester prompted Second Division Nottingham Forest to sign him in July 1939, but he hadn’t made a first team appearance for Forest when the outbreak of the Second World War halted his career. During the War he played wartime league football for Forest and guested for Notts County, Aberaman and Lovell’s Athletic. After the War he played for Merthyr Tydfil and was part of their 1947 Welsh Cup Final team that lost to Chester in a replay at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham.
