Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne born goalkeeper George Gill played for Newcastle City in 1911 and for Kelloe St Helen’s in 1912 before joining North Eastern League club Hartlepools United, being ever present in both 1913-14 and 1914-15 before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football, Gill having made 84 appearances before the War.
Gill served in the British Army with the Tyne Electrical Engineers during the First World War, and after the War had two further seasons with Hartlepools before they joined the Third Division (North) in 1921, Gill making his Football League debut at Wrexham in their inaugural League match that August. He made 66 appearances over their first three seasons as a League club and in total he played 213 matches for The Monkey Hangers before joining non league South Durham Steel & Ironworks in 1924, already 40 years old, before his eventual retirement.
