Description

Horsforth, Leeds born goalkeeper James (sometimes Jack) Newton Newton spent his early football career with Kilsyth Rangers, joining them before the First World War, and then during the War playing with Anderston Victoria, and Glasgow Perthshire, joining Rutherglen Glencairn in 1920. From there he joined Scottish League amateur club Queen’s Park in 1921, for whom he made his Scottish League debut against Ayr United in August 1921. He suffered an inauspicious start conceding eleven goals in his first two matches but he held on to the gloves and had much improved numbers thereafter, and remained Queen’s Park’s regular goalkeeper for two seasons, making 72 appearances for The Spiders.

In June 1923 he left Hampden Park to join Second Division club Bradford City, where he was understudy to Jimmy McLaren, making 5 appearances for The Bantams, before moving to Halifax Town in May 1925, where he missed only two matches for The Shaymen during a single season, playing 41 times, joining Coventry City in June 1926. He was an ever present for Coventry during their 1926-27 campaign, and made 30 appearances for them in 1927-28, but he didn’t play at all in 1928-29 and left Highfield Road to join Brighton & Hove Albion in May 1929 after 75 appearances for Coventry. At The Goldstone he was understudy to Stan Webb and made just one appearance for The Seagulls in a defeat at Clapton Orient in May 1930, and he joined non league Otley that summer, later playing for Burley Grove United in 1935 before returning to Otley in 1936, where he played until his eventual retirement.
