Kirkmuirhill, Lanarkshire born wing half Jack Conner began his football career with Blantyre Celtic in 1920 and joined Glasgow Celtic in 1921, spending a year at Celtic Park without making their first team. He signed for Alloa Athletic in 1922 and subsequently had a period on loan with Dykehead in 1924 before joining Plymouth Argyle in June 1925, without breaking through to The Pilgrims’ first eleven.
In May 1926 he joined Third Division (South) Newport County, making his Football League debut at Aberdare Athletic the same September, and he made 15 appearances for The Ironsides during a single season stay at Somerton Park. He joined Torquay United in June 1927 for their inaugural Football League season and played in their first ever League fixture against Exeter City that August, making 24 appearances for The Gulls before joining non league Guildford City in 1928.
