In June 1922 he signed for First Division Sunderland, where he was understudy to Charlie Buchan and made just one League appearance at Bolton that September. Soon after he signed for Second Division Leeds United for £750 on 3rd November 1922 and soon made himself at home by scoring a hat-trick on debut against West Ham United the following day.

He top scored in 1922-23 with 16 goals and the following season missed only 3 games as Leeds won the Second Division Championship. However after they were relegated in 1927 he re-joined Clapton Orient in June 1927 after 46 goals in 154 appearances. He top scored with 13 goals in the campaign as The O’s narrowly avoided relegation in 1927-28, but a year later they finished bottom and Whipp left Millfields Road for Brentford in May 1929 having scored a further 18 goals in 73 appearances. He injured his right wrist during his single season at Griffin Park and scored twice in only 7 appearances before being given a free transfer. He then joined Swindon Town in May 1930 and scored 5 times in 9 appearances during 1930-31, before leaving for non league Bath City in August 1931. He later joined Worcester City in 1932 before retiring.
