Description

Barnsley, Yorkshire born outside left Albert Newton was at Barnsley St George’s prior to the First World War but after the War was over joined his hometown Second Division club Barnsley, making his Football League debut at Stoke in August 1919, and in his debut season he was Barnsley’s second top goalscorer with 11 goals. He was a regular for seven seasons at Oakwell, missing only 3 matches as Barnsley finished third in the Second Division in 1921-22, narrowly missing out on promotion, scoring 21 goals in 240 games all of which were in the Second Division, before he joined Bradford City in the summer of 1926. However he only played in the opening 4 matches at the start of the 1926-27 season for The Bantams before retiring (probably due to injury).

NB in the photograph Newton stands on the right with Barnsley team mate Ernie Hine.
