Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne born inside left Frank McKenna began his football career with Swan Hunter after the First World War and played for Spennymoor United in 1920 and Wallsend in 1921 before joining Third Division (North) club Grimsby Town in May 1922, making his Football League debut at Walsall the same November. In his fourth match for Grimsby he scored a Christmas Day hat-trick in a win over Accrington Stanley, and he missed only two matches, scoring 16 goals during the campaign, including another hat-trick against Walsall in August 1925, as The Mariners won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1925-26.
McKenna remained at Blundell Park a further season in the Second Division before he joined Fulham in May 1927 after 34 goals in 124 appearances for Grimsby Town, but his single season at Craven Cottage, in which he scored 10 goals in 26 appearances, ended in relegation and he was sold to Norwich City for £100 in May 1928, and at The Nest he scored twice on his home debut in a win over Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic and 18 goals, his career best return, in 44 appearances during their 1928-29 campaign, but despite the return he was soon on the move again, joining Newport County in August 1929.
McKenna scored 4 goals in 24 appearances for The Ironsides during a single season stay at Somerton Park, and returned to the north east to join non league club Walker Celtic in August 1930, but in the 1932 close season he returned to Football League action with Wrexham, scoring 4 goals in 7 appearances for The Dragons during their 1932-33 campaign before returning to Walker Celtic at the end of the season, his final club before his eventual retirement.
