Ferryhill, County Durham born right winger Peter Bell began his football career with Willington Athletic in 1913 and played for Durham City in 1914, but after the First World War he resumed peacetime football with Willington Athletic in 1919. He was soon signed by First Division club Oldham Athletic, making his Football League debut at Manchester United in February 1920. A fringe player at Oldham, he scored twice in 18 appearances for The Latics before he was released in the summer of 1922, joining Third Division (North) club Darlington.
He scored 4 goals in 18 appearances for The Quakers before the year end but then joined Scottish League club Raith Rovers, where he enjoyed success alongside amongst others Alex James, and was part of their team that finished fourth in the Scottish League in 1923-24.
In the summer of 1926 he transferred to newly relegated Manchester City, and he helped them to win the Second Division Championship in 1928 before returning to Scotland to join Falkirk after 7 goals in 42 appearances for City. He only stayed a single season at Brockfield Park, returning to England with Midland League club Burton Town in 1929, before a return to Football League action with Darlington in 1930, where he scored once in 12 further appearances for The Quakers before leaving the club in 1931.
