Arbroath, Angus born goalkeeper George McWhattie began his career with Arbroath and from there he joined Hibernian in 1898, making his Hibs debut in October that year, keeping a clean sheet in a 5-0 victory. He made 23 appearances for Hibs over two seasons at Easter Road and then moved to amateur Glasgow club Queen’s Park in the 1900 close season. He made his Queen’s Park debut in a Scottish League match at home to Celtic in September 1900 and made 20 Scottish League and Cup appearances for Queen’s Park during 1900-1901.
He played first for The Scottish League, selected when a Queen’s Park player against The Irish League in Belfast in February 1901, and won 2 full Scotland international caps, firstly the same month in an 11-0 victory over Ireland at Parkhead, then a week later in a 1-1 draw against Wales at Wrexham. He played for The Scottish League again when a Hearts player against The Football League at St James’ Park in March 1902.
He joined Heart of Midlothian from Queen’s Park in the close season of 1901, playing his last match of 74 appearances in September 1904.
