Description

Aston, Birmingham born left back Alf “Freddie” Miles played junior football for Heath Villa in 1899 and Aston St Mary’s in 1900 before joining the era’s most recent club of football dominance, First Division hometown club Aston Villa. He made his Football League debut in a 7-3 win at Nottingham Forest on 19th December 1903, playing 17 times in his debut season during which he developed a good understanding with Howard Spencer. In April 1905 he was part of their team that won the FA Cup when Aston Villa beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Final at The Crystal Palace.

When Spencer retired in 1907, Miles partnered Tommy Lyons to become one of the most effective defensive pairings in the First Division culminating in their winning the 1909-10 League Championship, after they had finished runners up in 1908, and they again finished runners up in 1911 in their title defence season. From March 1912 when he lost his place, Miles was less regular and he didn’t feature in their 1913 FA Cup winning run. After a final match in a thumping 6-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in March 1914, Miles retired in the summer of 1914 having made a total of 270 appearances without ever scoring. He then became the club’s trainer until 1925.

Miles was called as a witness at the trial of George Stagg, who was found guilty of the murder of Aston Villa defender Tommy Ball in November 1923.
