Edinburgh born right half Donald McLeod came to Scottish First Division club Motherwell in 1938 from Whitburn Juniors and he was to stay at Fir Park for 13 years, losing some seven years of his prime to the Second World War, after which he became club captain in the 1940’s. Described as “one of the most consistent players at Fir Park” and as “a strong and forceful half back who makes the ball do the work”, it is probably true to say that his finest hour in a claret and amber jersey was in the side which won the Scottish League Cup in October 1950 when they beat Hibernian 3-0 at Hampden Park in front of a crowd of 64,000 at Hampden Park.
When Charlie Cox arrived on the scene for The Steelmen, McLeod’s appearances became fewer and fewer. After his playing retirement he moved to Heart of Midlothian in 1952 to be their assistant trainer.
NB in the image he is incorrectly titled “Willie”.
