Description

Miles Platting, Manchester born left back Vince Hayes began his football career with Newton Heath Athletic before joining hometown Second Division club Newton Heath, renamed Manchester United the following year, in February 1901, making his Football League debut at Walsall the same month, his only appearance of his debut season. He scored his first goal for The Heathens the following season, playing at inside left, in a win over Leicester Fosse in March 1902 but after playing at centre half and even outside right he settled into the team at left back from December 1903, helping Manchester United to successive third place finishes in the Second Division. He scored his only other goal for United in a win over Burslem Port Vale on the last day of 1904.

However his career hit a difficult period as he suffered several injuries. He broke both legs in 1905, and shortly after recovering, broke one again. He left United for Southern League club Brentford in May 1907, where he made 13 appearances in 1907-08, but returned to United in June 1908, by when they had already won their first League Championship, and he helped the club win their first FA Cup in 1909 as they beat Bristol City in the Final at The Crystal Palace.

Hayes missed only 8 matches in United’s 1909-10 campaign and won representative recognition when selected for The Football League in 1910, but later the same year he was transferred to Bradford Park Avenue in November 1910 after 128 appearances over his two spells at Old Trafford, and after 31 appearances for The Avenue he returned across the Pennines joining Lancashire Combination club Rochdale in 1913 to become their player-manager, his playing career being ended by the onset of the First World War.

Hayes first entered football management when he coached Norway at the 1912 Summer Olympics and he was Rochdale’s manager throughout the First World War before being appointed secretary-manager of First Division club Preston North End, in August 1919, who he guided to the 1922 FA Cup Final, where they were beaten by Herbert Chapman’s Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge. However their League form remained disappointing and he was sacked in February 1923, and later the same year he became manager of Atlético Madrid, a position he held until 1924.
