Description

Rotherham, Yorkshire born lrft back Walter Dudley was a club stalwart who made his Football League debut for First Division club Nottingham Forest against Sheffield United in December 1902, having joined the club in 1900. However it wasn’t until the autumn of 1904 that he broke into the Forest team on a regular basis, and he was ever present both for their 1905-06 relegation season and their 1906-07 first season back in the Second Division, when they were immediately promoted as Second Division Champions. He was also one of the thirteen Forest players who took part in the South American summer tour of 1905, when the team played matches in Argentina and Uruguay.

He was again ever present in 1908-09 and was a regular until March 1913. He played his last match for Nottingham Forest in November 1913 and over twelve seasons made a total of 299 appearances, never scoring, leaving the club in 1914 to join firstly Mansfield Mechanics for a brief spell and he then played for Doncaster Rovers before the onset of the First World War brought his career to an end. During the First World War, Dudley served with The Royal Garrison Artillery, seeing action at Vimy Ridge, Messines, Ypres and Passchendaele. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1918.
