Description

Middleton, Lancashire born right winger Jimmy Dyson began his football career with Park Villa in 1924 and played for British Dyestuffs in 1925 and Northwich Victoria in 1926 before joining Second Division club Oldham Athletic in March 1928, making his Football League debut against Port Vale the same month. He broke into the first team on a regular basis from that October, scoring a career best 16 goals in 1930-31 when he was Oldham’s leading goalscorer. and his form led to his transfer to First Division Grimsby Town in March 1932.

Despite scoring 7 goals in his 8 appearances before the season end, including a hat-trick in a 6-5 win at West Bromwich Albion at the end of April, he couldn’t help save Grimsby from relegation, but he helped them to return to the First Division as they won the 1933-34 Second Division Championship. He then scored 8 goals as The Mariners finished fifth in the League Championship in 1934-35, the club’s all time highest League finish. In February 1938 he was transferred to Nottingham Forest after 38 goals in 147 appearances for Grimsby Town, but he made only 16 appearances before joining non league Boston Town in the summer of 1939, whereafter his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War that September.

NB this photograph was taken on 27th December 1937 away at Stoke City. The match finished a 1-1 draw.
