Description

Prescot, Lancashire born right half Sam Morris began his football career with Prescot Cables, from where he was signed by First Division club Sunderland in 1928, making his Football League debut against Arsenal in January 1929. A fringe player during his first two seasons at Roker Park, he broke into the first team on a regular basis in September 1930 and made 33 appearances for The Wearsiders during 1930-31 as they reached the 1931 FA Cup semi final, where he was not selected as they lost to Birmingham at Elland Road, Leeds despite having played in all of the previous rounds.

Morris was again in Sunderland’s team at the start of the 1931-32 season but lost his place in November 1931 and played only twice more for the first team before leaving to join Second Division club Charlton Athletic in October 1932 after 65 appearances for Sunderland. He made 19 appearances for The Addicks through to December before losing his place at Christmas, and after Charlton suffered relegation he was released, joining Third Division (North) club Chester in 1933. However he only made 5 appearances for The Seals before moving into non league football with Bath City in 1934, joining Weymouth in 1935, his last known club before his eventual retirement.

NB in the image he is shown with Sunderland team mates Ernie England, Patsy Gallacher and Bill Murray.
