Prescot, Lancashire born full back (he played both sides) Jack Houghton began his football career with Prescot in 1910 and played for St Helens Town in 1911 before joining Southern League Norwich City in 1912, playing for The Canaries through to the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War. During the War he served in the Armed Forces, and after the conflict he joined Scottish League Glasgow Rangers for a short spell in 1919, before returning to England, signing for Second Division Fulham that November, making his Football League debut at West Ham United at the end of the same month.
He played once more for The Cottagers in a home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur a week later, and stayed in the reserves at Fulham until he joined newly elected Third Division (North) club Wigan Borough in September 1921. He made 29 appearances for Borough during their inaugural League campaign, helping them to finish 17th, and then followed the path of many other professional footballers into the nascent American Soccer League, playing first for Mistletoe Lodge in 1923 and then for Canadian Club in 1924, both Chicago based teams, before his eventual retirement.
