Description

Leamington Spa, Warwickshire born left half George Green was an England Schoolboy international who began his football career with local junior teams Leamington St John’s in 1918, Leamington Imperial the same year, and Leamington Town in 1919 before joining Birmingham League Nuneaton Town in August 1921 as a professional. After a number of clubs showed interest he signed for First Division club Sheffield United in May 1923, making his Football League debut at Manchester City the same August, being ever present during his first two seasons with The Blades as well as in their 1927-28 campaign. He was a member of the successful United side that won the FA Cup in 1925 when they beat Cardiff City in the Final at Wembley.

Four weeks after winning the FA Cup, Green was awarded his first England cap, playing in a 3-2 win over France in Paris. He went on to appear eight times for his country, winning his last cap against Belgium in Antwerp on 19th May 1928. He also represented The Professionals as they beat The Amateurs to win the 1924 FA Charity Shield, and made three appearances for The Football League between March 1926 and March 1927.

Described as “of hefty build, and knows how to use his weight to the best advantage. He is however not merely a spoiler but plays a game of football that is a pleasure to watch”, he spent eleven seasons at Bramall Lane missing very few matches, eventually becoming club captain of The Blades until he lost his place in April 1933, and he went on to make 422 senior appearances for the Yorkshire club, scoring 11 times, making his final appearance for Sheffield United in January 1934 before retiring from the professional game, and he subsequently returned to play for Leamington Town in July 1934, retiring when the club folded in May 1937.
