Description

Liverpool born centre forward Bill Hullett began his senior football career with hometown club Everton, joining them in December 1935, but he didn’t make a first team appearance before leaving Goodison Park for Third Division (North) club New Brighton on loan in January 1937. He made his Football League debut the same month, scoring in a 2-1 home defeat to Lincoln City, and managed 9 goals in 14 appearances for the Wirral club, before signing for Second Division Plymouth Argyle in October 1937.

Described as “a powerful shot and is extremely clever with his head… a player of exceptional ability combined with thrust and daring”, he scored 20 goals in 29 games for The Pilgrims in the final two seasons before the outbreak of the Second World War which was enough to earn a move to Manchester United in March 1939, but the War meant he never played for the Old Trafford club.

At the end of the War he played for Merthyr Tydfil in 1946 and also turned out in a friendly for Plymouth Argyle, who decided against re-signing him, Hullett joining Cardiff City in February 1948. In the remainder of the 1947-48 season he scored 8 goals in 15 games for Cardiff City as they finished fifth in the Second Division, and scored 7 more in 14 matches the following season before moving to Nottingham Forest in November 1948, where he played 15 games, scoring twice. He then wound down his career with a return to Merthyr Tydfil as player manager in the summer of 1949, spending four seasons there, and after a brief spell with Worcester City in 1953, he finished his career with Treharris, joining them the same year.
