Goalkeeper Bob Wylie was playing for junior club Cambuslang Rangers when spotted by St Johnstone manager Tommy Muirhead, and having signed for The Saints in 1932, he got his chance in the first team at Muirton Park when incumbent Scottish international keeper Sandy McLaren joined Leicester City in 1933z
Thereafter Wylie made 222 appearances for St Johnstone until the cessation of football due to the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, after which he continued to play in wartime football, being part of The Saints’ teams that performed well in Division One throughout the 1930’s, reaching the semi finals of the Scottish Cup in 1933-34 where they narrowly lost to eventual winners Rangers and managing to finish fifth in the League in 1934-35.
He was not a big goalkeeper standing only 5 foot 9 inches. He was described at the time as “quick in the jump, sound in positioning and fearless…. Wylie is particularly good at flying shots that come unexpectedly”.
