Ecclesfield, Sheffield born goalkeeper Joe Greaves’ first involvement in senior football was on the books of Sheffield Wednesday in 1892-93, where he didn’t make the first eleven. He most likely joined Barnsley while still a non league club, playing in The Midland League, but in 1898 they were successful in their application to join the Football League, and although Greaves missed their inaugural League fixture at Lincoln City when Thomas Fawcett made his only appearance between the posts, Greaves made his Football League debut in their next match at Burslem Port Vale and was an ever present for the rest of the season, and also during 1899-1900.
Greaves missed just 4 matches in 1900-01 but he was displaced by Arthur Seymour during 1901-02 and didn’t play again for Barnsley until the end of November 1902, having a run of 5 matches through to Christmas Day, and 5 more matches in April 1903 when Seymour was unavailable. He finished his career having played 118 matches for The Tykes during their Football League years, and was probably the first Barnsley player to be featured on a cigarette card!
