Wallasey, Wirral born right back Herbert “Duke” Hamilton played junior football for New Brighton Baptists in 1921, Harrowby in 1922 and Poulton Rovers in 1923 before joining local Third Division (North) professional club New Brighton in December 1923, making his Football League debut at Ashington the same month. It proved his only appearance for New Brighton before he joined First Division Everton in October 1924, for whom he was largely a reserve, making one appearance for The Toffees’ first team against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison in January 1927.

In May 1927 he joined Second Division club Preston North End but remained mainly a fringe player, making 24 appearances over four seasons at Deepdale, before joining Chesterfield in June 1931, where he spent the most successful period of his career. Of his six seasons at Saltergate he was ever present in two (1931-32 and 1933-34) and missed a single game in another, 1935-36 when after their relegation in 1933 he helped them with the Third Division (North) Championship to return to the Second Division,

However he lost his place in February 1937, after scoring 7 goals in 211 appearances for The Spireites, before hereturned to The Wirral to join Tranmere Rovers in May 1937. He was again an ever present in 1937-38 as Tranmere won the Third Division (North) Championship and played 5 more matches for Rovers in the Second Division, but he then joined Accrington Stanley in November 1938 after a single goal in 54 appearances for Tranmere, playing 14 times for Stanley before a move to non league Bangor City in 1939. He later returned to Merseyside to play for Marine, but his career was then effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War.
