Description

Sheffield born centre forward Alec Hellewell played for Yorkshire League club Mexborough from 1898 and joined Second Division club Barnsley in April 1900, making his Football League debut at New Brighton Tower later the same month, scoring in a 6-2 defeat. He was a regular performer for The Tykes for the next nine seasons, and was Barnsley’s joint leading goalscorer in 1906-07 with 13 goals, his best single season return, the season in which Barnsley first reached the FA Cup quarter final, presaging their Cup success that would follow at the end of the decade. But Hellewell lost his regular place at the end of the 1908-09 season, playing his last game for Barnsley in April 1910. In total he scored 58 goals in 266 appearances for Barnsley before his retirement in 1910.
