Rotherham, Yorkshire born outside left Arthur Hetherington had a lengthy spell in non league football before stepping up to the top level. He started his career with Dalton & Eastwood United and joined Midland League club Shirebrook in 1925, playing for Mexborough Athletic later the same year. He joined Gainsborough Trinity in 1926 and played for Denaby United in 1927 before a move later that year to Mansfield Town. He then returned to Dalton & Eastwood United in 1928, from where he was signed by Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 1929, making his Football League debut at Southampton the same month.
Never a regular at Wolves, he had his most productive season in 1929-30 when he scored 7 goals in 23 first team matches, but he was retained by Wolves for a further five seasons without ever playing more than 20 matches, playing only once as they won promotion to the top flight in 1931-32. Having scored 24 goals in 96 appearances in old gold and black, he transferred to Preston North End in January 1935, but after losing his place in March he made only 6 further appearances that September before a move to Third Division (South) club Swindon Town in the 1936 close season after 4 goals in 18 appearances for The Lambs.
At The County Ground he enjoyed ever present status throughout his stay, the two busiest seasons (for first team football) of his career, and he returned 12 goals in their 1936-37 campaign, again a career high. He was transferred to Watford in February 1938 after 14 goals in 74 appearances for The Robins, but in two seasons at Vicarage Road he was only an occasional performer in a competitive Watford team that finished fourth in the Third Division (South) both years, and after a single goal in 8 appearances his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.
