Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire born outside and inside left Ronnie Green began his football career with local junior club Coalpit Heath from where he signed for Southern League club Bath City in 1929. His progress was sufficient to see him signed by Third Division (South) club Bristol Rovers in June 1932, making his Football League debut on Boxing Day the same year in a match at Aldershot. Â Green remained a fixture in the team from his debut through to the end of the season, scoring twice in 22 appearances in the outside left berth, and having been spotted by the country’s dominant club at the time, First Division champions Arsenal, he was signed by them in June 1933, and he remained on the playing staff at Highbury for two seasons while they completed a treble of League Championship wins without ever making a first team appearance.
In February 1935 he was signed by Second Division club Notts County, whom he couldn’t help save from relegation at the end of the season, and he stayed a further season at Meadow Lane playing mainly at inside left, before he signed for newly promoted First Division club Charlton Athletic in July 1936 after 7 goals in 41 appearances for The Magpies. Green didn’t come into the team until March 1937, scoring in both of his first two fixtures albeit his debut goal in a defeat at Sheffield Wednesday was a consolation strike, he then scored in a 3-0 win over Manchester United at The Valley, but after a heavy defeat at Derby County in his third match he was dropped and not picked again as Charlton nearly won back to back Championships, eventually finishing in the club’s all time high position, runners up in the League Championship to Manchester City.
Green was allowed to leave The Valley, signing for Second Division club Swansea Town in May 1937, where he spent a single season scoring 4 goals in 8 appearances for The Swans before leaving The Vetch Fieldand retiring from the professional game to return to his roots, where he re-joined Coalpit Heath, his last known club.
