Sutton, London born inside left George Ayres had played football while serving in the Royal Air Force, from where he signed for local Third Division (South) club Charlton Athletic in 1922, making his Football League debut at centre forward at Southend United two days before Christmas the same year. After a single goal in 7 matches during his debut season he saw more regular action the next season, mainly at inside left or right, and impressed enough that he was signed before the season end by Second Division club Sheffield Wednesday, for whom he scored on his debut in a win over Manchester United on 3rd May 1924, and for whom he also registered a hat-trick scoring all three goals in a 3-0 win over Stockport County at Hillsborough that September.
However he lost his place in March 1925 and despite 4 goals in 3 matches the following autumn he lost his place after a 4-1 defeat to Derby County and never made the first eleven again before a transfer to Second Division club Blackpool in the 1926 close season after 11 goals in 27 matches for The Owls. At Blackpool he converted from inside left in December 1926 and played most of his two seasons at the club at either left or centre half, however possibly through injury he played his last match for The Seasiders in March 1928 and his football career thereafter is uncertain.
