Description

A successful competitive sprinter, Tynemouth, Northumberland born outside right Jimmy Miller began his football career with South Shields Albion in 1910 and played for Wallsend Park Villa in 1911 before spending 1912-13 on the books at Newcastle United, having signed for £25 in May 1912, without making an appearance for their first team. He joined Second Division Grimsby Town for £50 in April 1913 and made his Football League debut against Notts County that September, scoring once in 6 appearances over the next month in The Mariners’ first eleven. These were his only appearances before The First World War, but after the War he joined Everton in the 1919 close season and started the 1919-20 season in their first team, scoring once in 8 appearances for The Toffees before joining Second Division Coventry City that December.

He stayed only a month at Coventry, playing 7 times, before returning to the First Division with Preston North End for whom he scored once in 17 appearances before the season end. In the summer of 1920 he joined Welsh club Pontypridd, then playing in the Southern League, returning to the north east in 1921 to join Darlington, where he didn’t make their first team.

He moved on joining Harry Parkes’ Chesterfield in May 1922, for whom he scored once in 36 appearances during 1922-23 as they finished 4th in Division Three (North). In the 1923 close season he joined Boscombe (soon to be renamed Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic) for their inaugural Football League season, playing 38 matches including their first League fixture at Swindon Town that August. A year later he was on the move again, returning to Wales to join Swansea Town, where he scored once in 27 appearances as Swansea won the Third Division (South) Championship. Despite this, he didn’t stay to play in the Second Division, joining Luton Town in May 1925. He played one season at Kenilworth Road, scoring 3 goals in 11 appearances for The Hatters before retiring in the summer of 1926, already aged 37.
