Sheffield, Yorkshire born outside left George Shelton played for junior clubs Attercliffe in 1918 and Star Inn Club in 1919 before joining First Division club Sheffield Wednesday in January 1920, making his Football League debut at Preston North End the next month. He made 9 appearances as Wednesday suffered relegation at the end of the season, but in two further seasons he only played occasionally, 9 more appearances in total, before joining Third Division (South) club Exeter City in May 1922.
At Exeter he played for four seasons and first played at left half in March 1925 before spending most of 1925-26 in that position. Shelton scored 12 goals in 85 appearances for The Grecians, before moving to Third Division (North) club New Brighton in July 1926 where he reverted to outside left. He scored 3 times in 24 appearances in his single season on The Wirral before joining non league side Okehampton in 1927, his last recorded club.
